Chapter Fifteen

Blair

By Saturday, I’m ready to relax and unwind with friends.

I haven’t been able to steal anything more than a few kisses behind closed doors while at the clinic with Gabe, thanks to a few patients he’s been dealing with at night at the hospital, so I have high hopes for this evening after the party, and if the dirty text message I received earlier is any indication, we’re definitely on the same page.

I pull into my childhood friend’s parents’ driveway and park in the grass beside the other vehicles. Grabbing the small gift bag in the back seat, I climb from the car and follow the music to the backyard.

“There she is!” Hallie hollers, her eyes a little glassy, as she throws her arms around my shoulders and gives me a hug.

I glance over to where Ellie and the others sit, already reading their expressions.

Curtis didn’t show up.

“Sorry I’m a little late. Aggie called over video chat, and it took forever to get her off the phone,” I state.

She gives me a lopsided smile, one laced with a bit of intoxication. “She’s such a sweetie,” she gushes, bringing whatever fruity drink concoction she’s drinking to her lips. “Go! Put on your suit. We’re getting in the hot tub now that you’re here,” she demands, turning and strutting over to where the rest of our friends sit.

I take in the small group. Ellie’s here, as well as TD, Ava, and Logan. I can’t help but notice the way Logan’s eyes watch the sway of Hallie’s hips as she walks his way, but before his gaze lingers too long, it drops down to the beer in his hand.

Interesting…

“Welcome,” Hallie’s mom, Debbie, says, coming over to greet me. She wraps her petite arms around my shoulders and pulls me into a hug. The gesture instantly makes me miss my mom, who I’ve talked to several times since I arrived back in Pine Village but haven’t been able to see since she visited me in Chicago earlier this spring.

“Thank you for inviting me.”

“It wouldn’t be Hallie’s birthday celebration without you,” she replies, giving me that familiar, warm smile I’ve come to expect from her. “There’s plenty of snacks over on the table and drinks in the cooler. I think the kids are all getting ready to get in the hot tub.” She playfully rolls her eyes. “It’s eighty-three degrees out here.”

Chuckling, I pat the bag under my arm. “I was told to bring a suit.”

“You can change in the bathroom downstairs, or if that’s occupied, just run up and use Hallie’s old room.”

“Thank you, Mrs. Rhodes.”

“Debbie or Deb,” she replies, giving me a teasing glare mom-look.

Smiling, I head for the house, passing the group at the table as I go. “Where’s your suit?” Hallie asks loudly.

I hold up the bag. “I’m running in to change.”

“Hurry up! We’re getting in,” she declares as she stands, stripping off a tank top and exposing her bright red bikini top.

I don’t miss the way Logan’s eyes practically bug out of his head either.
